Mercury Retrograde: What Your Astrologer Wants You To Know

You’ve probably heard someone blame Mercury retrograde for broken technology or travel delays, but this cycle is so much more than a string of inconveniences. Beneath the surface, every Mercury retrograde carries an invitation toward recalibration and renewal.

To understand Mercury retrograde and access its power for reflection, we first need to understand Mercury itself.

Who is Mercury? The Cosmic Messenger

In mythology, Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks) was the messenger of the gods and the only deity who could move between worlds. In the Hermetic tradition, Mercury connects to Hermes Trismegistus, father of alchemy, astrology, and the sciences, who legend holds had mastery over the three worlds. They say he was a man who accessed his divine nature, and so had access to insights and powers beyond the limits of the mortal.

In alchemy, Mercury is the key to the Great Work, the living practice that transforms our base matter (regular mind-body) into gold (enlightened mind-body). In astrology, Mercury rules the mind, communication, and the intellect’s power of reason. In Sanskrit, Mercury is the Buddhi, the higher intellect that uses awareness and reason to guide the lower mind’s habit-patterns toward liberation.

These ancient systems, as well as modern science, point to the truth that your mind has more power than most of us realize or utilize. In the mundane, the mind has the power to create joy or suffering, communicate well or poorly, solve our problems or create new ones. On a high level our minds have powers still being understood by modern science but well-documented in circles that study the esoteric: telepathy, creative imagination, travel into dream-realms, and psychic gifts are only a few of these.

In the body, Mercury travels along the nervous system, connecting the mind and body in ways that have genuine physiological effects (like when you’re worried and suddenly you experience tension, or when you imagine something wonderful and suddenly you have more energy).

Mercury is the bridge between thought and embodiment. This is the current that translates your beliefs and higher reasoning into your reality.

What Actually Happens During Mercury Retrograde

From Earth’s perspective, Mercury appears to move backward three to four times each year. Mercury isn’t truly moving backward, the apparent reversal is an optical illusion created by the geometry of Mercury, the Sun, and the Earth.

Each retrograde also has a shadow period: the time Mercury travels through the same degrees of the retrograde zone before and after reversal. When Mercury retraces its steps, we’re invited to do the same: to reflect, review, and realign.

Many people notice that Mercury retrograde coincides with a number of back-steps: travel delays, communication missteps, slow business, even exes coming back—it’s all fair game. But many people miss the big picture. These external events are the cosmic life power directing your intellect to rethink and reflect.

Mercury Retrograde as a Season of Reflection

Mercury retrograde is a time to notice the bigger picture in life. Yes, you may experience some snafus out in the world, but life isn’t all about efficiency. Mercury retrograde asks us to slow down and listen. Here are a few ways to work consciously with this cycle:

Review, Reflect, and Reconnect:

Tend to unfinished conversations, relationships, and COMMITMENTS

In the constantly moving world of always moving forward, are there relationships you’d like to tend to, recommit to, or even find closure from?

Rewrite Your Internal Script

Become conscious of your habitual thought patterns and choose which stories to keep.

Many of our thoughts are on auto-pilot, and often our habitual mental and emotional states are unconsciously creating our lived experiences. Now is a time to become conscious of what has been operating through your mental attitudes, beliefs, and emotions, and to select which ones you’d like to continue and which ones you’d like to shift.

Listen More Deeply

Reclaim silence as part of communication

Listening is a key part of communication, and with the world, media, and communications as loud as they are, it can be difficult to listen to the silent voice of the inner heart. Mercury retrograde is a great time to hone in on your listening. Learn to hear the hidden messages portrayed in the external world of communications as well as the silent truths that are always whispering from within.

The Deeper Lesson: Integration Over Perfection

We live in a culture that values output over reflection. Mercury retrograde asks you to slow down enough to truly integrate what you’ve been experiencing in life. Integration happens through your nervous system, breath, cells, and mind. Give yourself time to let what you’ve experienced take shape.

How to Work with This Mercury Retrograde

  • Shadow begins: Oct 21, 2025 - 20° Scorpio, conjoining Mars and Black Moon Lilith

  • Retrograde station: Nov 9, 2025 - 6° Sagittarius, conjoining Mars

  • Direct station: Nov 29 - 20° Scorpio

  • Shadow ends: Dec 16, 2025 - 6° Sagittarius

Specifically, this Mercury retrograde highlights the role of Mars in the recent (and still ongoing) grand trine in the water signs.

Mars is now in Sagittarius, conjoining Mercury as it stationed retrograde. A few weeks ago, during the shadow period, Mars was in Scorpio with Black Moon Lilith and Mercury, creating a trine with Saturn and Jupiter.

This formation is helping us uncover the shadows, redefine the suffering of the past, and ultimately align with our highest visions for life, if we’re willing to build from a soft place, and adapt from a place of hope and positive imagination rather than fear.

Mercury’s Pause

Mercury retrograde is a pause, and whether you love it or dread it, it’s a natural pattern of nature that we need. Take time to look within so you can look outward and forward with renewed clarity.

Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast: Scorpio-Sagittarius MashUp

Scorpio season is finishing up, and Sagittarius season is about to begin. The Sagittarius and Scorpio energies will be intertwined for a while, since this Saturday the Sun enters Sagittarius at the same time Venus enters Scorpio.

What these energies have to offer you is the deep integration that was sparked by last weekend's new moon in Scorpio.

As Venus begins her transit of Scorpio (and the Sun finishes his), you're called to look deeply into how you love. Are there shadow sides to the patterns you have in your romantic, artistic, and loving relationships with yourself and others? Do you find yourself seeking love, beauty and enjoyment in ways that serve aspects of your psyche that still exist in shadow?

As the Sun enters Sagittarius, now is the moment to shed light on those patterns. While Scorpio energy knows how to traverse the shadows in your psyche, Sagittarius knows exactly how to see clearly in the dark.

Sagittarius is the star gazer of the zodiac, the sign most able to look into the darkness to find tools for navigation and inspiration for the great journey ahead.

If you use these energies well, you'll not only become familiar with your unconscious patterns, you'll be able to navigate yourself into a bigger-hearted, more aware place.

Ask yourself: What is it that you truly want in terms of love, beauty, and artful living?

In what ways do you ask, or don't ask, for these needs to be met?

In what ways do you seek for these needs to be met? Could you become more conscious of your drives and desires in these areas?

Are there behavior or thought patterns that move through you in difficult moments that you don't understand?

This week's AstroYoga pose nourishes the areas of the body affected by these transits.

ASTRO YOGA TIP OF THE WEEK

Practice Uttanasana (standing forward fold)

IMG_0207.jpeg

To practice this pose:

1. From standing, make the feet parallel and press down through both feet evenly
2. Take a deep inhale and lengthen the spine
3. Gently tip the pelvis forward as you fold toward the legs
4. Either stop when you can go no further with a long spine OR bend the knees so you can fold further
5. Breathe and relax

PRO TIP

If your ribcage is pressing into your thighs (by bending the knees or otherwise), create some spinal traction and length by pulling gently on the toes or by hugging the calf muscles. You'll find gentle length in your spine that feels something like an inversion table--Aaaaah.

Notice what feelings come up for you in this pose. Does it seem too simple? Worthwhile? Pleasant or unpleasant? All of these feelings will tell you something about your present experience in yoga and life.

My advice on how this asana connects with astrology is general. Your personal chart will offer more specific advice on what sorts of activities could fortify your best qualities and encourage growth and healing where there’s unrealized potential.

New Years 2020 and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast

A decade ends; a decade begins

New years is a potent type of solar return that happens each year. This solar moment is rife with potentialities. This is why New Years is a time to set your resolve for the coming 12 months. As the sun returns and strengthens all of life on earth, the seeds your intentions have sown begin to sprout, and you begin to see your desires realized.

2019 ended for much of the zodiac with big shifts in energy, and now is your moment to make an intention from the place you find yourself now (rather than where you thought you'd be now).

Christmas New Moon and Solar Eclipse

You've probably been feeling challenges pop up lately (especially if you have a lot of cardinal placements in Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn), and I bet you've wondered how long these challenges will last.

This is a prolonged season of challenge for the area of your chart ruled by Capricorn, but this week will bring some light to those challenges you've been facing.

Early on the 26th (in North America), there will be a partial New Moon Solar Eclipse next to Jupiter. This is eclipse will bring light and some beneficial energy to what you've been struggling with.

Winter Solstice 2019 and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast

Winter Solstice 2019 and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast

The Winter Solstice is HERE

Last week was full of difficult transits. You may have read about it here, and I'm also guessing you could sense it in the air. The solstice this Sunday brings a welcome pause.

Even though the difficult transits through Capricorn are ongoing into 2020, now is a moment of calm amid the storm. The winter solstice is a moment to take a breath and remember that all things are temporary; journeys into darkness happen for a reason.

Tough Transits and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast for 12/10/2019

Tough Transits and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast for 12/10/2019

Why did Sagittarius dislike the jokes from the present transits? Because they were so Capricorn-y.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Puns aside, is it just me or does it feel as if Capricorn season has come early this year?

There's an astrological reason for that. Today, Venus, the planet of love, pleasure, and beauty teams up with Saturn, the planet of boundaries and restrictions. All of this is happening in Capricorn.

So right now: Capricorn is housing Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus, and you may be feeling more boundary-ridden than normal. If you've been reading these for awhile, you know that Capricorn is being pressure-cooked for a prolonged season of churning out a proverbial diamond.

Jupiter, Capricorn, and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast 12/3/2019

Jupiter, Capricorn, and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast 12/3/2019

Jupiter in Capricorn

Capricorn energy has been under immense pressure for the past year (and will be for the next one); this prolonged season is seeking to poke and prod the Capricorn-ruled area of your chart until it churns out a proverbial diamond.

Yesterday, Jupiter entered Capricorn for a 13 month stay. Jupiter's entry marks a time when you can finally begin to see the glimmer in the forming diamond. Now is your time to beneficially expand your approach to measured, sustained effort over time. What is it you're working toward?

Sagittarius Season and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast for 11/26/2019

Sagittarius Season and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast for 11/26/2019

Welcome to Sagittarius Season!

So much is happening this week: yesterday, Venus entered Capricorn; today, there's a new moon in Sagittarius, and tomorrow Neptune ends his retrograde period. And, to top it all off, this is Jupiter's last week in Sagittarius until the year 2030.

What does it all mean?

Essentially, this astrological moment is offering you an opportunity to face your major challenges of the year with new eyes. How can you examine your major stressors with love, gratitude, and heightened awareness?

Mars in Scorpio, Mercury Retrograde, and Your AstroYoga Forecast for 11/19/19

Mars in Scorpio, Mercury Retrograde, and Your AstroYoga Forecast for 11/19/19

Goodbye, Mercury Retrograde; Hello, Mars in Scorpio!

Today, Mars moves into Scorpio, one of his favored places in the zodiac, and tomorrow, Mercury turns direct. This is a big shift in the energy of this Scorpio Season.

If you find Scorpio's deep, intense energy comforting (finally everyone is facing how they really feel), then this energy shift might feel great to you. But if you're one to shy away from confrontation (or to choose it selectively), this might feel like an unwelcome burst of intensity.

Whether you naturally enjoy this sort of energy or not, I suggest taking a few deep breaths to create a container for whatever you experience. Your reality isn't something to either force or avoid. Your reality simply is, and your only job is to experience it as you are.

Full Moon and AstroYoga Forecast for 11/12/19

Full Moon and AstroYoga Forecast for 11/12/19

Taurus Full Moon Right Now!

Today is the Taurus full Moon; in fact, it's happening right now (as this email is being sent out)!

Full moons represent the culmination of a cycle, and a moment when something that's no longer necessary can be released. With this full moon in Taurus opposite Mercury during his retrograde, you can be sure that this moon may shed some light on thought/communication patterns that no longer serve you in practical ways.

Are the ways you think and communicate compatible with your daily life? How do your deeply set patterns interact with the environment, your home, and others? Are there any thought patterns you've developed in response to trauma/injury that leave you more connected to past hardships than present reality?

The AstroYoga pose of the week opens the body and draws connections from the area of the body ruled by Scorpio to the area ruled by Taurus.
